Dolch Words
_What are Dolch Words?
In his 1948 book, "Problems in Reading", Edward William Dolch published a list of 220 frequently used 'service words' and a separate list of 95 common nouns. These lists are estimated to contain 50-75% of the words in children's books. [Read More]

In Mr. Foxworthy's class, Dolch Words are used, along with many other forms of assessment, to gauge a student's reading level and ability. Students will click on the PowerPoints below and read the words while a nearby adult checks off their accuracy.

TREASURES
Treasures is Bridgman Elementary's new reading program. As the program is shared and discovered, many new activities and resources will be available to us. This will be an exciting year and we should all look forward to the benefits of this program. RAZ-KIDS Raz-Kids is an online program through Reading A-Z. Raz-Kids has an app that we use daily. Raz-Kids allows the students to listen to a story, read the story, and then take a comprehension quiz. Students are able to listen to or read the story as often as desired. As the students perform well they advance to a more difficult reading level. ACCELERATED READER Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that tests a students' comprehension (understanding) of a book. Students should read the book as many times as it takes until they can retell the book from beginning to end. Once they are confident about the details of the book, they will use the computer to take a test and earn points depending on the number of questions answered correctly. Please do your best to read with or to your child as well as taking the time to listen to them read. Beginning with the 1st Marking Period, students will be expected to earn a certain amount of AR points. Those that do will be receive a reward! Students in the first marking period are expected to read either first or second grade level books. I realize there are some students that may be below or above this level but limiting them to first or second grade level books allows me to se how consistently they achieve a passing grade at grade level. Beginning with the 2nd Marking Period students will be assigned reading levels according to data gathered from the first marking period AR reports as well as other sources. Levels may include any in our library from kindergarten to 5th grade and above. Those of you interested in doing AR similar activities at home (especially over the summer!) please visit www.bookadventure.com. According to its main page, it is maintained by Sylvan Learning and is free. Readers can create book lists and take multiple choice quizzes to earn points. I have never used it but suggest you check it out! |
Reader's Oath
I promise to read
Each day and each night. I know it’s the key To growing up right. I’ll read to myself, I’ll read to a crowd. It makes no difference If silent or loud. I’ll read at my desk, At home and at school, On my bean bag or bed, By the fire or pool. Each book that I read Puts smarts in my head, ‘Cause brains grow more thoughts The more they are fed. So I take this oath To make reading my way Of feeding my brain What it needs every day. Words by Debra Angstead Missouri-National Education Association |
